Israel's Defence and Security
Israel's defence doctrine dates from David Ben-Gurion in the 1950s. It rests on deterrence, early warning and decisive victory, and the IDF's first public strategy, in 2015, added defence as a fourth pillar. A small conscript army relies on reservists, so warning is vital. Warning failed twice: in October 1973, and on 7 October 2023, when about 1,200 people were killed in Israel and 251 were taken hostage. Military spending reached $46.5 billion, or 8.8 % of GDP, in 2024. State-owned IAI and Rafael and privately owned Elbit build the Arrow, David's Sling and Iron Dome interceptors, drones and other systems. Defence exports reached a record $19.2 billion in 2025. Israel fought Iran directly in June 2025, and again alongside the United States from February to April 2026. It has also fought Iran's allies in Lebanon, Gaza and Yemen. The High Court ordered Haredi conscription in June 2024, and the question remains unresolved.
