About KnowIsrael

What this is

KnowIsrael is a free, source-cited reference on Israel — its history, geography, government, society, economy, and security. Every explainer is written to be factually accurate, politically neutral, and accessible to a general audience.

This is a reference, not an editorial platform. We do not take positions on contested political questions. Where reasonable people disagree, we present the range of views and cite primary sources so readers can make their own judgements.

Editorial standards

Each piece of content on KnowIsrael is:

  • Source-cited. Every factual claim links to or cites a primary source — government documents, UN records, peer-reviewed research, or authoritative official statistics.
  • Reviewed. Each explainer is reviewed by at least two editors before publication and updated when underlying facts change.
  • Dated. All content carries a publication date and a last-reviewed date. We believe readers deserve to know how current the information is.
  • Politically neutral. We do not advocate for any government, party, or position. Where terminology is contested (e.g. "occupied territories" vs. "disputed territories"), we use the most widely recognised formulation and note the disagreement.

Sources & methodology

Primary sources we rely on include: the United Nations archives, the Israeli Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS), the Knesset Records, the Bank of Israel, the IMF, the World Bank, OECD datasets, SIPRI military expenditure data, and official treaty texts.

For historical content, we draw on peer-reviewed scholarship and, where available, declassified government documents from Israeli, British, US, and UN archives.

Numbers are updated when primary sources publish new data, typically quarterly. The last update date is shown on the Numbers dashboard.
